The Opportunity

In the summer of 2020, Pepper Hamilton LLP and Troutman Sanders LLP announced a merger to become Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders LLP (“Troutman Pepper”). From the merger emerged a firm that boasts over 1,200 lawyers, operates out of 23 offices, and generates revenues that rank among the top 50 of U.S. law firms.

Prior to the merger, Troutman Pepper began searching for a tool that could create a more efficient closing process. Successful deals involve coordination between several time-sensitive work streams that coalesce into one closing. The firm identified two particular workflows that it needed to address—signature packets and closing binders—and sought a tool for streamlining these workflows. Further, because the combined firm knew that post-merger it would be handling a greater volume of transactional work, it needed a tool that would be easy to implement, adopt, and maintain, so that Troutman Pepper could focus its attention on its post-merger integration processes.

The Solution

SimplyAgree is a dynamic, collaborative closing management platform that combines the ability to (1) distribute and receive electronic and/or handwritten signatures, (2) compile fully executed documents, and (3) build firm-branded closing binders. With SimplyAgree, Troutman Pepper was able to address the specific pain points expressed by its attorneys and staff using a tool that was easy to adopt and allowed everyone to work together regardless of location.

Equipped with the ability to quickly and accurately send and receive electronic or handwritten signatures, the firm provided its clients with an easy way to close their deals without the typical administrative headache. And clients could receive firm-branded, hyperlinked closing binders in hours instead of weeks.

Individualized Onboarding. SimplyAgree sat down with each new Troutman Pepper user to understand the current legal matters they were working on, as well as their pain points and challenges. There was no lengthy onboarding process to get started—just direct, one-on-one assistance.

Easy Implementation, Increased Innovation. SimplyAgree worked with the firm’s Innovation Solutions and Information Technology teams to successfully implement the platform at the firm. SimplyAgree is designed to require minimal legwork to get the tool up and running—though the SimplyAgree team provided live, in-person set-up and support whenever required. After integrating with the firm’s existing single sign-on and electronic signature providers, SimplyAgree fit nicely into Troutman Pepper’s tech stack. And, with its success, SimplyAgree increased the visibility of the Innovation Solutions team within the firm.
